Creative Child Magazine's Toy Awards Program is unique in that all products submitted are reviewed by many people, including moms, music educators and early education professionals. Only one product per category can win a Toy of the Year award, Book of the Year Award or Game of the Year Award. The remaining finalists receive a prestigious Preferred Choice award. The Seal of Excellence is another prestigious award that is given to those products that are not finalists but do exceed expectations based on the criteria for nurturing creativity and education in children.

The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio was founded in 1989 as the only independent consumer review of children's media. The organization does not charge entry fees or accept ads from manufacturers. Award-winning products are selected by a noted expert in child development, children's literature, and education, and further tested by an objective panel of kid judges. Judging criteria include kid-testers' responses along with expert assessment of educational and play value, safety, age appropriateness and other factors.
