Every summer vacation includes some down time indoors, whether the rain dampens your plans or you just need a break from the sun. To keep the troops entertained, make sure that the cabin or cottage is stocked with games for when everyone heads inside.

One of my family’s favorites is “Speed Scrabble,” which uses the tiles from the game but not the board.  Begin by placing the tiles face down in the middle of the table. Then everyone simultaneously flips over seven tiles and begins forming their own “board” using those seven letters in any acceptable formation.  A player calls out “Pick!” when he or she uses all the letters, and everyone has to add a letter to their board—whether they are ready to or not. This continues until the letters are gone.  The first person to finish with all legitimate words is the winner.

Another great educational toy for kids—and for the rest of the family—is a visual challenge game called Q-bitz.  In three rounds, players combine speed, luck and brain power to create patterns from cubes.  Collect cards for successfully making patterns; the player who earns the most cards wins.  It’s great for two to four players ages six and older.  But be careful—our reviewers claim that this game is addictive!

Take advantage of our $5 off coupon and try Q-bitz at your cabin this summer!
