This is a great toy! My 9 year old loves it and my 12 year old plays with it too. It requires patience and creativity. It can be frustrating, but my kids loved Kivas at a museum so that is why I decided to buy them.

This is a fantastic product that every family should have. It is a hit on so many levels: fine motor skills, logic, problem solving, imagination, and FUN. Our 5 year old loves it and asked for more, but its also fun and engaging for adults. Don't be put off by the fact the blocks are all the same. That is the magic of them. We built a tower up the ceiling on our first day with little difficulty. And all of the contraptions in the book work well, which I was afraid might not be the case. This is the best 'toy' we've bought in a long time. Also, I think extra money spent for the maple blocks is worth it. The pine blocks are lighter so the structures aren't quite as strong, and they are softer so they are more easily dinged and damaged. But you can get twice as many of the pine than the maple for about the same price, so its a tough call. I'm personally glad we chose maple, but the pine is still a terrific product. Just buy some, you won't regret it.
